website for the mobile phone?

i’ve always wanted to learn how to make a site for the mobile phone, so doing this research was something i was looking forward to.

i found this website that made it seem so simple. It has 4 easy steps to make a site mobile:

1) use a mirror hosting site with a mobile subdomain, so for example, my site could use http://mobile.themoo-viereview.com.

2) there’s a snippet of php code that is necessary to use to make a site be usable by mobile phones. What the code does according to the site is:

Changes all URLs to “mobile”-ized URLs.

Strips all linefeeds, carriage returns, and tabs.

Trims multiple spaces down to one (HTML doesn’t recognize more than one space in a row).

Changes any anchored images with alt text to plain text anchors.

Strips all stylesheets, images, inline styles, scripts, and comments (including RDF).

Tells search engine robots not to index or crawl the mobile version of the site so as to not create duplicate listings.

3) you will also need another piece of php code that. this part of the code actually tells the page to output to the browser. it takes it in and reads the code and spits out the page.

4) finally, i will need to use an .htaccess file to enable prepends and appends. the prepends and appends are the files that store the codes in #2 and #3 above.

Another site I found was MoFuse. This site apparently has a simple platform that makes it easy to build your mobile site. Seems like they let you choose for iPhone or Blackberry, but looks like there’s a fee to use. But looks like they also host as well.

I think for my site, which will contain several videos (flash-based), it would be ideal for me to make a mobile site. the mobile site will exclude the video reviews, but will display the reviews in text format. i think this would be the best method to not alienate my mobile users.

Capstone Project

I’ve been doing a lot of research on what a capstone project is and this is what I’ve decided it means: A capstone project is a course in which the students utilize the culmination of all their knowledge and abilities of what they have learned in all their years in this degree program, and apply it to an advanced, well-researched, and creative project that is related to the interactive media industry. It sounds like a lot, and from the research I’ve done it is. It seems as if in most other universities, students have to apply to the course, and even once they have applied, most are required to have a “sponsor” faculty member that guides them through the process, helping them refine their goals and objectives and keeping them on track with meeting set deadlines.

It was hard to find examples of capstone projects, but I found one that was really cool: Project. What I thought was the best part of it, is that the students were allowed to work together. They were given a real-life project. This seems much more realistic to me than the way in which we do our projects here. In the real world, you don’t always get to choose what your project will be. You are given something to work on, and you use all your creative and technical skills to build this site that will provide all the answers to the client’s needs.

This site, while it listed only individual projects, I think still had some neat ideas. It incorporated more video in one project, and I think they all had good real-life applications.

Purpose:The purpose of this site is to create a new ecommerce website, Drops.com, focusing on high-end quality alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Users will be able to browse a selection of wines, champagnes, and “Dry Soda” beverages. The user will also have the option to use a beverage recommender, in order to find the best match for their needs. The recommendations will be based on different criteria including foods, occasion and beverage preference. The site will increase name recognition for the company as well as revenue. A look and feel to be used throughout the site will be developed. Company information, product information, and topic-related material will be incorporated into the site along with relevant imagery. Regular ongoing content and product updates are to be implemented to keep topics new and fresh, and relevant to generate return traffic, as well as create new leads. Special offers and discounts are to be prominently displayed to generate user interest and revenue for the company. The site will be created using XHTML/CSS, PHP, AJAX, and JavaScript.

Target Audience:

Primary Demographic:A 28 year old female represents the primary demographic target for the site. She is an educated, professional businesswoman, with a minimum annual salary of $40,000. She is very internet savvy frequenting online shopping sites such as Amazon.com, Ubid.com, BarnesAndNoble.com, spending on average a minimum of 20 hours a week online on various shopping and social networking sites. She travels frequently, and likes to stay up to date on current events. She also likes to entertain often for various social events.
